A reporter and a photojournalist for WYFF News 4 were covering the weather damage from Subtropical Storm Alberto when, in a fatal accident, a tree crashed down on their sport utility vehicle.

The two were driving down Highway 176 in North Carolina Monday afternoon when the accident occurred.

As the fire department came on the scene, the reporter who had just died in the vehicle had interviewed the chief of Tryon County’s fire department minutes before about the storm. Highway 176 was shut down after the accident to allow the North Carolina Highway Patrol to investigate the accident. Subtropical Storm Alberto has caused other roads throughout the state to close due to flooding and mudslides.

“Two journalists working to keep the public informed about this storm have tragically lost their lives, and we mourn with their families, friends and colleagues,” Governor Roy Cooper said.
